KNOW WHEN YOU QUALIFY
What senior discounts start at 55, 60, 62, and 65?
There is no single age that unlocks every senior discount. Each provider sets its own rules. These four U.S. examples show why checking the exact threshold matters.
The quick answer: Michaels starts at 55, Kohl’s at 60, the federal Senior Pass at 62, and most Amtrak senior fares at 65. These examples cost money; none is an unconditional free product.
| Age | Example | Offer and key condition |
|---|---|---|
| 55+ | Michaels | 10% off eligible purchases. Verify age; merchandise exclusions apply. |
| 60+ | Kohl’s | 15% off qualifying purchases in stores on Wednesdays. Bring ID; exclusions apply. |
| 62+ | Federal Senior Pass | Paid pass: $20 annual or $80 lifetime. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency required. |
| 65+ | Amtrak | 10% off most qualifying rail fares. Proof of age and fare restrictions apply. |
At 55: begin with purchases you already planned.
A qualifying Michaels customer can use the offer on eligible regular and sale items. Online use requires age verification through a Michaels Rewards account. Check exclusions before comparing prices. Our Michaels and Kohl’s shopping guide explains the practical differences.
At 60: timing can matter as much as age.
Kohl’s Wednesday offer is in-store only and cannot combine with another percentage-off coupon. If you already have a better coupon or another store charges less, use the lower final price. The qualifying birthday is a starting point, not a reason to make an extra purchase.
At 62: a pass may suit your travel plans.
The federal Senior Pass covers eligible entrance and standard day-use fees at participating federal recreation sites. It does not eliminate every reservation, camping, or other charge. Compare the pass price with the fees for the places you actually plan to visit. See our national parks and rail savings guide.
At 65: compare the complete rail fare.
For most Amtrak services, select the Senior traveler category when searching. Joint Amtrak/VIA Rail cross-border services have a 60+ threshold. Some charges and services are excluded, so compare the complete itinerary and travel conditions before booking.
What if you are looking for something truly free?
Start with our free classes and conversation groups guide. It covers Senior Planet’s programs for adults 50+ and Well Connected’s groups for adults 60+. Participation costs and everyday telephone or internet costs are explained separately.
Do you need AARP for these four offers?
No paid AARP membership is listed as a condition for the four age-based examples in the table. AARP dining offers follow different membership rules; see the separate Denny’s and Cicis dining guide. Do not assume an AARP offer is restricted to people 55 and older.
Three checks before you claim a discount
